Each year the Historical Society of Greater Lansing sponsors scores of special events, walking tours and exhibits at the Rogers Carrier House on the campus of Lansing Community College. We are totally supported by the generosity of community members and supporters. In order to celebrate and preserve the history of Greater Lansing and archive and tell the stories of our community members we periodically host a fund-raising event.
This year we are beginning an annual fund-raising event to be held at a local historic site or home. We are very excited to host our first fundraiser at the home of Donna and Nick Mosely, 2126 Moores River Dr., which was the original cottage of Lansing Entrepreneur and Developer J.H. Moores and his spouse Frances.
Moores is known as the “father of the Lansing Parks System and his enthusiasm was contagious,” according to Lee Bancroft, Lansing first parks director. As a result he gave the people of Lansing Moores Park, originally Belvedere Park. Upon his death his estate also set aside the gift of Frances Park and money to build Riverside Drive and Moores Pool .
On a bronze plaque at the entrance to Moores Park is this message from Moores.
“I shall pass through this world but once: if therefore there be any good thing I can do to any fellow human being let me do it now. For I shall not pass this way again.”
The Historical Society of Greater Lansing takes this great lesson of philanthropy to heart and in the spirit of J.H. Moores is hosting a fundraiser at his original summer cottage on Moores River Dr. in Lansing. The Moores cottage was the first home built on Moores River Dr. then Riverside Dr. and sits directly across from the Lansing Country Club.
